Nikon announces Nikon 1 V1 and J1– a new mirrorless camera system and more

You’ve seen it. A breakthrough in technology and design they said, a mirrorless camera system with a lot of helpful features. The video and the list of features looks promising. Some highlights:

  • An incredible 73-point AF array – super fast auto focus — I heard it’s the world’s fastest autofocus!
  • Simultaneously capture full HD (1080p) photo and video — Okay, what good digital camera can’t take 1080p video now? It’s the new standard.
  • Smart photo selector – takes 20 full-res image in one shot, the camera then selects 5 photos with the best exposure, composition, non-blurry and facial expression (eyes not closed). — Pretty smart, but this is not new, I personally don’t mind going through my photos and selecting the best one, technology sometimes would fail, so I wouldn’t take my chances.
  • Motion Snapshot – is hard to describe.. a combination of still image with a movie vignette, in 2.5x slow motion, designed to bring photographic event to live — Genious!

This camera will be on sale on October 20th. Available lenses are: 10-30mm ƒ/3.5-5.6, 30-110mm ƒ/3.8-5.6 for $249.95, 10mm ƒ/2.8 for $249.95, and 10-100mm ƒ/4.5-5.6 for $749.95. Color choices: black, white, silver, red, pink.

Price: Very steep I’d say. With digital cameras ranging from $100-300 these days, the new Nikon 1 is way above the range. If Nikon 1 was a digital SLR, then sure it makes sense, but as a point and shoot, I don’t think that price tag will last.

Nikon J1 starts at $649.95
Nikon V1 starts at $899.95
